Kindle Scribe vs reMarkable 2 - Which Is Best?

Buy the Kindle Scribe if reading is at least half of why you want the device and you already live in the Kindle ecosystem. Buy the reMarkable if handwriting is the point, you want the best pen feel and a distraction-free tool, and reading is a bonus. Most people who agonise over this are really just deciding whether they are a reader who writes or a writer who reads.

The Scribe wins reading, and it is not close. It has a proper warm-lit 300 ppi screen, the full Kindle store, and syncing across your devices, so it is a genuinely excellent large-format reader. The reMarkable has no frontlight, only basic reading software, and no real store, so reading on it is a compromise you tolerate rather than enjoy.

If you plan to read books on this device as much as write, the Scribe is the obvious pick.

The reMarkable wins writing, and again it is not especially close. The pen has a paper-like friction and near-zero latency that still sets the standard, and the note software is more refined, with cleaner organisation and reliable handwriting conversion. The Scribe's writing has improved a lot and is perfectly good, but it feels a touch more like glass and its note tools are less mature.

If handwriting is your main reason to buy, the reMarkable is the better instrument.

This is the real fork in the road. The Scribe lives inside Amazon: huge store, effortless syncing, but a walled garden with no third-party apps. The reMarkable is deliberately closed in a different way, a focused device with no store or browser, and it nudges you toward the optional Connect subscription for full cloud features.

Neither is open like a Boox. You are choosing between Amazon's ecosystem and reMarkable's monk-like focus.

The reMarkable is thinner and lighter and feels like a premium notebook; the Scribe is a lovely slab of aluminium with a bigger reading screen. Battery favours the Scribe for reading-heavy use, while both handle a week or two of writing comfortably. Prices are in the same ballpark once you add the reMarkable's pen, though the Scribe often works out cheaper all-in.

Neither is waterproof, which is worth noting if that matters to you.

Reader who writes: Kindle Scribe. Writer who reads: reMarkable. If you want colour, apps and reading all in one, honestly neither is ideal and a Boox Note Air 4C deserves a look. But between these two specifically, decide which half of the read-and-write equation you care about more, and the winner is clear.
